About ETTE


On our site you can find a lot of information connected with ETTE project UzTEA Samarkand branch has been involved. As you may have some questions about ETTE, we tried to predict some of them and provide you with answers.

What is ETTE?

ETTE (English for Teaching: Teaching for English) is a 4-year project sponsored by the British Council.

What are aims?

The ETTE project has the following aims:

  1. Improve the classroom performance of teachers of English, especially those teaching in remote or marginalised areas.
  2. Increase teachers’ access to a variety of developmental methods and ELT materials, which they will feel confident in using and adapting.

Which countries are involved?
There are 7 countries involved in the project:
Afghanistan
Bangladesh
Kazakhstan
Kyrgyzstan
Nepal
Pakistan
Uzbekistan

What are partners?
In Uzbekistan the project is run by the British Council in collaboration with Ministry of Education, InSETTI (In-service Teacher Training Institutes) and UzTEA (Uzbekistan of Teachers of English Association).

Which strands does it have?

There are the following strands:

  1. teacher training and trainer training courses
  2. materials design and course development
  3. mentoring and peer support

What has been done so far?

We are proud of the results of our work:

  1.  36 teacher trainers, some of them trained in frames of ETTE project, work for ETTE project
  2. The team of authors designed the course consisting of 32 sessions for 64 academic hours. The course has the following features:
  1. Usage of English
  2. Usage of various interaction patterns
  3. Usage of reflection
  4. Microteaching

The course is based on the principles:

  1. The course materials have been piloted in 12 regions of Uzbekistan to indicate teachers’ needs, relevance and level of difficulty. A number of improvements based on participants’ feedback were made.
  2. 240 secondary school teachers participated in the piloting of course materials.
  3. In Romania and Uzbekistan mentoring and peer support course was conducted. Participants were enabled to get information about:

Later, in Nepal, during mentor trainer training course the participants were shown how to design mentor courses according to their local context.

Besides this there were a number of regional meetings, some of them were conducted in Uzbekistan.

What is to be done?

In 2010 we are going to set peer-support groups, to have more teacher training, to conduct mentor training and to establish centres for autonomous learning at InSETTIs.
